We were delighted to launch our new Driving Ahead scheme earlier this week, offering Barnet’s care leavers like 18-year-old Emma Harris the opportunity to learn to drive. We can now offer 12 young people 30 hours of free lessons from The AA Driving School.

There are continuing concerns about the experiences offered to older adolescents being looked after (‘in care’) in the UK and, especially, to care leavers. Questions are asked about the limitations of State care compared with normal family life. This paper reports on an initiative to provide driving lessons to a group of six young men living in residential homes in one city.

AA-Sponsored Driving Lessons for Young People in Care: Monitoring Report August 2017 The AA Charitable Trust (AA) has been involved in funding driving lessons for young people in care (ie separated from their families and looked after by local authorities) since 2011. This has occurred in two stages: the first, a pilot stage between 2011-13 and the second 2015-17.
