Council Tax
Brighton and Hove City Council has exempted care leavers from Council Tax

Council tax is exempted up to the age of: 26

Brighton and Hove City Council does not include care leavers from other areas in their council tax exemption policy

To apply care leavers need to:
Inform Council Tax dept they are a care leaver
Housing
Care leavers receive priority for social housing

Priority is offered up to the age of: No fixed age – they get it when they have been assessed as ready

Banding priority is: A

Additional information / how to qualify:
For your PA to assess you as ready for your own tenancy, you will:
• Be expected to have sustained at least a year’s continuous employment, training or
education since your 18th birthday.
• You will have to demonstrate that you have the practical skills like budgeting and cooking,
and that you are emotionally ready to live on your own.
• It is also essential that you are not in debt and that you have shown an ability to pay
bills/service charge etc.
• You will also have to attend the Leaving Care team’s two-day course on Independent living
skills. Part of this course will cover how to bid on properties when you are ready to do this.
Care leavers get to practice independent living with taster flats
