Council Tax

Durham County Council has exempted care leavers from Council Tax

Council tax is exempted up to the age of: 25

Durham County Council includes care leavers from other areas in their council tax exemption policy

To apply care leavers need to:
Supported by YPA and welfare rights advisor in the team to complete the relevant form or the young person can phone up themselves if they feel able to.

Housing

Care leavers receive priority for social housing

Priority is offered up to the age of: 25

Work with YPA and the YPA sends a letter confirming they are a care leaver, we also have a CLASP (Care leavers accommodation support protocol) which we follow to help with the planning of this

Special Occasions

Durham County Council pays towards Christmas and other religious celebrations for care leavers

Details:
Yes we provide a Christmas gift to all young people who would not get a gift from anyone else, we also access food hampers and other types of gifts during these times. We apply to charities such as cash for kids and staff have done their own fundraising to buy extra gifts and hampers

Birthday cards for all young people and gifts for young people who will not get a gift from anyone else.

We have undertaken peer mentoring training for 7 mentors and matched 2. This scheme need to be progressed further.
