Council Tax

Hackney has exempted care leavers from Council Tax

Council tax is exempted up to the age of: 25

Hackney does not include care leavers from other areas in their council tax exemption policy

To apply care leavers need to:
Apply for Council tax deductions.

Housing

Care leavers receive priority for social housing

Priority is offered up to the age of: 21 or 25 if studying away at Uni

Banding priority is: Direct Offer of a 1 bed or if a parent 2 bed property

Additional information / how to qualify:
We have 18 tenancies a year to offer care leavers.

Care leavers do not get to practice independent living with taster flats

Hackney will not in principle assist as a guarantor for care leavers in private rented property

Hackney in principle will assist with providing a deposit for care leavers in private rented property

Details:
If assessed as ready for a tenancy they can use their Setting Up Home Allowance.

Hackney has a children in care and care leavers council

Details of council:
The senior division of Hackney’s Children in Care Council is made up of Looked After Children and Care
Leavers aged between 16 to 21; however, the average age of our attendees is 19. Since the beginning of
the Covid-19 pandemic, the group has met once a week, with an average of 9 young people attending
each meeting. Overall, 21 young people are currently participating in the senior division of Hackney’s Care Council.
