Council Tax

City of London has exempted care leavers from Council Tax

Council tax is exempted up to the age of: 25

City of London does not include care leavers from other areas in their council tax exemption policy

Housing

Care leavers receive priority for social housing

Priority is offered up to the age of: 25

We are unable to confirm the banding priority

Additional information / how to qualify:
They qualify by being eligible for social housing (being UK/ EU citizen or with leave to remain) and by being old enough to have a tenancy. They are nominated to Housing Needs team by Children’s services. When approaching 18, they and their social worker meet with Housing Needs Team to discuss the offer which will be made to them – single direct offer of studio accommodation in social housing on one of our estates. They chose top 3 choices where they wish to live and they will be allocated a suitable property when one becomes available on a 1st come basis unless Housing Needs Team is advised by social workers that their need should be prioritised. Housing Needs Team require proof documents such as passport / birth certificate / travel documents; national insurance number and a copy of the pathway plan.

Care leavers do not get to practice independent living with taster flats

City of London in principle will assist as a guarantor for care leavers in private rented property

Setting up a home

Care leavers are provided with a setting up allowance
