Council Tax
Isle of Anglesey has exempted care leavers from Council Tax

Council tax is exempted up to the age of: 25

Isle of Anglesey does not include care leavers from other areas in their council tax exemption policy

To apply care leavers need to:
Leaving Care Team will inform the the Council Tax department – NOTE – should the Care Leaver be house sharing it will only be 50% of the Council Tax that is exempt
Housing
Care leavers receive priority for social housing

Priority is offered up to the age of: 25

Banding priority is: Urgent or band one – dependent on their assessed circumstances at the time.

Very often, a young person leaving care or left care will be provided with ongoing support. Support workers can approach housing with the care leavers’ consent in order to support the application process.

An application would qualify for the ‘Urgent’ band if they:
have an urgent housing need (as set out in the box below), and
have an Anglesey and Community connection (please see 9.5 for what counts as a
Anglesey connection).
The Urgent Band is reserved for very urgent cases. Very few applicants are likely to be
awarded this status.
4. People accommodated by the local authority in care or approved
supported housing who are deemed ready to ‘move on’
5. The household needs social housing urgently to prevent a child being taken
into care or remaining in care
Examples include:
(a) Foster parents who urgently need accommodation to take care of a child.
(b) Cases where a child care plan has identified the need for accommodation to prevent
the child being looked after by the authority (for example, child in need / looked after
child / child protection).
In the event the care leaver is homeless or threatened with homelessness, emergency provision can be provided, if deemed suitable by their social worker / support worker. Once the care leaver moves into more secure & permanent accommodation, a homeless starter pack is offered which provides basic home set up facilities. This is done in partnership with Childrens’ services to ensure the care leaver is provided with the correct home set up support and so forth.
Care leavers get to practice independent living with taster flats

Additional information:
Ynys Mon Council’s Leaving Care team have a training flat where young people are able to live independently for up to 28 days. If this is successful they can apply for further stays at the flat at a later stage.
This is available from 16-25 and needs to be discussed with the Leaving Care Team.
Isle of Anglesey in principle will assist as a guarantor for care leavers in private rented property

Details:
This is offered provided the landlord accepts. The young person would be subject to monthly support visits from the Leaving Care team.
Isle of Anglesey in principle will assist with providing a deposit for care leavers in private rented property

Details:
This will be provided by the Leaving Care Team in conjunction with the Homesless prevention team and may be subject to a Financial Inclusion assessment in the first instance.
Setting up a home
Care leavers are provided with a setting up allowance

There are no ringfenced apprenticeship vacancies for care leavers at Isle of Anglesey

Additional information about work and training:
The Isle of Anglesey Council has had a scheme called ‘Denutalent’ which can allow for young people to apply for 16 weeks paid training within the authority. However, this is not solely for Care Leavers and is quite competitive.
The Leaving Care Team work in conjunction with other work and training support providers on the Island, MON CF and ADTRAC and have a named person within the Local Job Center.

Care leaver aged 18 and 21 will receive £50.00, all other birthdays are £25.00
